Jesus Paid It All.

In Tabletalk this month, I have been studying about the fallenness of man, our need for a mediator, and the mediator's qualifications. So far... I'm losing on all accounts and it's confirmed - mediator needed!

The Heidelberg Catechism is a great source for understanding what the Bible says about our need for a savior and why Jesus Christ is the only adequate mediator.

15. What manner of mediator and redeemer then must we seek?
One who is a true and sinless man, and yet more powerful than all creatures, that is, one who is at the same time true God.

18. But who now is that Mediator, who is at the same time true God and a true, sinless man?
Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is freely given to set us completely free and to make us right with God.

Last night, Andrew and I read an incredible prayer from The Valley of Vision. It certainly struck a chord in my heart, as this is what I've been studying.

"The Precious Blood"

Blessed Lord Jesus,
Before thy cross I kneel and see
the heinousness of my sin,
my iniquity that caused thee to be 'made a curse,'
the evil that excites the severity
of divine wrath.
Show me the enormity of my guilt by
the crown of thorns,
the pierced hands and feet,
the bruised body,
the dying cries.
Thy blood is the blood of incarnate God,
its worth infinite, its value beyond all thought.
Infinite must be the evil and guilt
that demands such a price.
Sin is my malady, my monster,  my foe, my viper,
born in my birth,
alive in my life,
strong in my character,
dominating my faculties,
following me as a shadow,
intermingling with my every thought,
my chain that holds me captive
in the empire of my soul.
Sinner that I am, why should the sun give me light,
the air supply breath,
the earth bear my tread,
its fruits nourish me,
its creatures subserve my ends?
Yet thy compassions yearn over me,
thy heart hastens to my rescue,
thy love endured my curse,
thy mercy bore my deserved stripes.
Let me walk humbly in the lowest depths of humiliation,
bathed in thy blood,
tender of conscience,
triumphing gloriously as an heir of salvation.

I have to be honest... I'm normally not in to incredibly emotive Christian videos (like this one), but if you have time, listen to the words of the hymn as Fernando Ortega sings. Jesus paid it all!

I've included the lyrics if you'd like to follow along.

"Jesus Paid It All"

I hear the Savior say,
Thy strength indeed is small!
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all

CHORUS:Jesus paid it all
All to Him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power, and Thine alone,
Can change the leper's spots
And melt the heart of stone

CHORUS

For nothing good have I
Where-by Thy grace to claim
I'll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calvary's Lamb

CHORUS

And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete
Jesus died my soul to save
My lips shall still repeat

This post might mean more to me since this is what I'm learning personally, but I hope that the power of Christ's saving death and resurrection would make us all rejoice!

  1. Each year that I have (as they say in Peru) this promise becomes more precious to me! Nothing else can explain how one continues in joy from one day to another...
